Visual poetry FOR THE ASARI CHAIR

Art direction, Spring 2023

In a 2020 interview with SixtySix Magazine, designer Naoto Fukasawa says “I keep everything simple. Like haiku. You don’t say things directly. You evoke emotion. You bring out nuance. That’s the beauty of things.”

Fukasawa describes his first project with Herman Miller, the Asari Chair, a friendly creature that people just want to hug—warm, soft, delightful. Inspired by his sentiment, we paired a series of three haikus with visual metaphors to celebrate Asari’s comfort, joy, and form.

Optische letters

Personal project

A lowercase font inspired by the illusory work of Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. Individual letters are complex two-dimensional figures that—on their own or combined—pay homage to Escher’s perspective puzzles “Relativity” and “Waterfall”.
